Seniors Registry

Working together to serve and protect Moncton’s seniors.

Purpose

The Moncton Fire Department and the Mayor’s Seniors Advisory Committee are proud to offer a seniors registry program. The program will help protect Moncton’s seniors who live alone during a time of crisis.

How it works

During an emergency, seniors who live alone are often the most at risk. Moncton’s registry will allow seniors to submit their name and contact information to the Moncton Fire Department. Seniors can rest assured that the information submitted will be kept confidential.

In the event of an emergency such as an ice storm, snowstorm, flood or any other disaster or crisis, Moncton firefighters will contact the names on the registry to ensure that everyone is safe. This could consist of phone calls and/or at-home visits. And, it will allow the Moncton Fire Department to take the necessary actions to ensure the safety of our citizens.

Submit your name by calling the Moncton Fire Department at 506-857-8880.

International Day of Older Persons

The General Assembly of the United Nations designated October 1 as International Day of Older Persons. This day was observed for the first time throughout the world on October 1, 1991.

By designating a special day for seniors, the Assembly was giving recognition to the contributions of seniors to development and also drawing attention to a demographic phenomenon: the greying of the population, the “age of aging.”

The Mayor’s Seniors Advisory Committee began celebrating this day in 2006 with its first reception being held in the lobby of Moncton City Hall.

Senior Friendly Community

A sub-committee has been created to look into how Moncton can become a more senior-friendly community.

The Mayor’s Seniors Advisory Committee at the May 5, 2008 council meeting tabled a report entitled “Senior-friendly Community Initiatives” during their presentation of the 2007 Annual Report.

The report includes a series of senior-friendly initiatives.

Services for Seniors

From the onset of the committee’s inception, committee members felt it was essential to identify municipal services available before being able to make recommendations on possible improvements.

After having received presentations from various municipal departments, the committee deemed it was important to share this information with Moncton’s seniors.  With this in mind, a pamphlet listing services available was developed.

The pamphlet lists the most common services seniors would be interested in and refers people to the general number for the City of Moncton for any other inquiries. This document was first unveiled at the 2007 International Day of Older Persons reception.

The document is available at City Hall through the Mayor’s Office and online: Services for Seniors brochure
