Fire Prevention Division
Fire prevention, safety, and education are the primary concerns of the Fire Prevention Division.
The division consists of three fire prevention officers and one division chief. These officers work closely with the provincial office of the fire marshal, carrying out inspections of various properties. They continue to update themselves on fire codes and building codes and follow the guidelines of the Fire Prevention Act when carrying out inspections.
The officers investigate fire scenes and are required to be on call.
Inspections of properties include:
- Apartment buildings
- Private residences
- Daycare centres
- Adult special care homes
- Licensed establishments (for licensing as well as crowd control)
The officers also approve building plans to ensure fire codes are met.
Lectures and demonstrations on fire prevention and safety are also carried out through this division, including educational programs in city schools. The division also provides assistance with preparing fire drills for businesses.
