2013 Order of Moncton recipients

October 7, 2013

MONCTON – In early November, Mayor George LeBlanc will honour the 2013 inductees to the Order of Moncton: Leonard H. Lockhart, Peter Sawyer and Bill Whalen.

“In this, our fourth year of recognizing engaged citizens, the Order of Moncton offers us the opportunity to publicly thank and celebrate outstanding citizens for their giving spirit and relentless quest to improve the quality of life of Monctonians. Their contributions are vastly different, yet they share a common thread: their exemplary commitment to others and to our community. I am pleased to congratulate Mr. Lockhart, Mr. Sawyer and Mr. Whalen as the 2013 inductees,” said Mayor George LeBlanc.

Leonard H. Lockhart was born and raised in Moncton, and is the former Chairman and CEO of Lock-Wood Ltd. His service to community and professional groups span over five decades, to the benefit of residents from all walks of life, including youth (as president of the Moncton Boys Club in the late 1960’s) and seniors (as director of Drew Nursing Home in the 1990’s), for example. Throughout his career, Mr. Lockhart has also served on the Board of Directors for the following organizations, among others: the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada, the Codiac Regional Policing Authority, the Greater Moncton Economic Commission, and the Canadian Manufacturer’s Association. Leonard Lockhart has been a member of the Order of Canada since 2004.

Peter Sawyer has been, for decades, a tireless literacy advocate and volunteer tutor, enriching the lives of countless New Brunswickers. More than 20 years ago, he was a founding member of the Greater Moncton Literacy Council - now the Moncton Regional Learning Council - of which he is now President. He is also secretary of the provincial board of Laubach Literacy New Brunswick, as well as the past president of Laubach Literacy. In 1992, Laubach Literacy Canada (LLC) presented him with the LLC Award of Excellence. Peter Sawyer was also the first tutor to be given the honour of receiving the Outstanding Adult Literacy Tutor Award from the Literacy Coalition of New Brunswick in August of 2013.

Bill Whalen is a well-known and respected business leader in Moncton. He was recently awarded a Fellowship by the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS), for outstanding leadership. That quality has extended into many community organizations: from athletics, as a founder of the Moncton Mets and Vice Chair of the IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships, to the arts (campaign for the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada), to community service (United Way Campaign Chair, Moncton Rotary Club member and Paul Harris Fellow), to economic growth (Chair of the Airport Authority Board), to health (Juvenile Diabetes Association and the Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation).

The Order of Moncton recipients will be awarded with an Order of Moncton medal, a pin and a certificate of honour at the formal induction ceremony, to be held at Moncton City Hall on November 6, 2013 (a public reception will follow at 8 p.m.).

The selection committee considered many nominations, and is comprised of elected municipal officials, three residents of Moncton and a representative of the City of Moncton administration.
