Prepare your home for an extended absence in winter

December 23, 2014

MONCTON – The City of Moncton would like to advise residents who are planning to leave their homes vacant for an extended period of time for any reason (visiting family for the holidays, students leaving their apartments or travelling down South) to take the proper precautions to avoid frozen water pipes. In cold temperatures, pipes have the potential to freeze within 24 hours if precautions are not taken. Below are a few helpful tips to prevent freezing pipes and costly repairs:

•          Locate your main water shut-off valve inside your house, turn off the water and drain the pipes, or call the City of Moncton Dispatch line to ask for your water to be shut off.
•          Be mindful to not lower the heat too much.  Temperature should not be set any lower than 13°C (55°F).
•          Do not shut off heat to areas of your house that contain plumbing or water fixtures. Open cabinet doors to allow heat to get to un-insulated pipes under sinks near exterior walls. Keep doors open to bathrooms, kitchen, and laundry room.
•          Make sure windows are closed, and repair any cracks or holes around doors and windows to keep cold winter winds from blowing in and freezing water pipes and meters.
•          Have a family member or neighbour check your house or apartment daily.

If an emergency does occur and your water pipes or water meter freeze and/or break, contact Dispatch 24-hour line: 506-859-2643 to have your water shut-off.
