Presence of Blue-Green Algae in Tower Road Reservoir (Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview)

September 26, 2017

MONCTON - The City of Moncton wishes to advise its residents, as well as those in the City of Dieppe and the Town of Riverview that the presence of blue-green algae has been confirmed at the Tower Road reservoir.

Samples collected and tested in the Turtle Creek reservoir have not detected the presence of blue-green algae at this time.

Water remains safe for drinking and all other regular activities such as bathing, cooking and washing.

The City of Moncton is working with the Department of Health and the Department of Environment and Local Government. In addition, two experts in the field are assisting to remediate the issue as quickly as possible. Both the City of Dieppe and the Town of Riverview are also supporting the City of Moncton’s efforts.

Water sampling and testing will continue and plans are in place to ensure the highest standards of water quality are maintained for our customers.

Should there be any change in the current situation, the public will be notified.

The City of Moncton appreciates your understanding and patience.

Notes:

  • The Turtle Creek reservoir has been the tri-community’s primary drinking water supply since 1962.
  • The Tower Road reservoir is the community’s secondary drinking water supply source. Opened in 2014, it provides an additional 10 million cubic meters of drinking water supply to the communities of Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview.
  • Blue-green algae are naturally occurring microscopic organisms found in both fresh and salt water. Under conditions such as warmer water temperatures, high nutrient loads, and other influences, blue-green algae can multiply quickly and create blooms which commonly occur in summer or early fall.
