REMINDER: Mandatory helmet use at all City of Moncton ice surfaces effective January 1st, 2014

December 11, 2013

MONCTON – The City of Moncton wishes to remind residents that effective January 1st, 2014, participants of all ages skating at any City owned arena will be required to wear a CSA approved helmet (ice sport helmets). Anyone without a helmet will not be permitted to step on the ice.

The policy was implemented for the safety of all users and to help prevent injuries, namely head injuries. The City is encouraging helmet use for all users and has been conducting a public awareness campaign leading into the implementation of the policy.

“Our goal with this policy is to provide a safe skating environment for all users,” said Jocelyn Cohoon, Director of Leisure Services with the City of Moncton. “This is a proactive measure that we feel will help mitigate serious injuries from occurring in our arenas.”

Certain exceptions to the policy will be granted for figure skaters who are registered with Skate Canada who have successfully completed the Can Skate program and are competing in sanctioned competitions. The policy will also not apply to team personnel during sanctioned Quebec Major Junior Hockey League activities.

With this policy, Moncton becomes the first city in New Brunswick to mandate helmet use by all skaters on city ice surfaces.

The City of Moncton appreciates the public’s cooperation.
