Transportation plan unveiled for Moncton’s Events Centre

MONCTON – With the new Events Centre in downtown Moncton expected to open in September 2018, the City of Moncton set out to develop a plan that would help spectators travel to and from their event easily and efficiently. The result is the ‘Transportation Dispersal Plan’, which promotes a multi-modal approach that takes into consideration parking, public transit, pedestrians and cyclists, in keeping with best practices used by similar facilities across North America.

At Monday’s public session of Council, Peter Allaby, P.Eng. (Transportation Lead with Crandall Engineering), highlighted some of the report’s key findings: “Our team did a thorough study of Moncton’s current situation, and found that over 80 % of spectators would use their car to travel downtown. We also counted the number of existing parking spaces within a 10-12 minute walk from the Events Centre; in consultation with the various parking lot owners, we have determined that nearly 4,000 spots would be made available for public use, including on-street metered parking. As such, it is our conclusion that the existing supply of parking spaces, with an average of 2-3 people per vehicle, is more than sufficient to accommodate even a sold-out show at the Event Centre, when 10,000 spectators would be expected.”

“Many community stakeholders contributed to the development of the Transportation Dispersal Plan, through extensive consultations led by the IBI Group (the consulting firm retained to deliver this plan), and we now have a comprehensive roadmap to ensure a positive customer experience, from the moment they leave their house, to the moment they get back home after an event,” added Alcide Richard, Director of Design and Construction with the City’s Engineering department. “Our next step is to look at our implementation strategy for the 17 categories of action items, which features things like: accessibility, designated pick-up and drop-off zones for the different modes of transportation, and seasonal implications, for example. This will be our focus for the coming months.”

The Transportation Dispersal Plan also takes into account the sizes of different events, and provides for scalable solutions to deal with a small-scale event, where approximately 3,000 spectators are expected, with a medium-scale event for 6,000 people, and a large-scale event, for the maximum capacity of 10,000 attendees. 

“Starting in early 2018, prior to the Centre opening, we will provide detailed information for event-goers to help them choose their preferred transportation option,” said Nicole Melanson, Manager of Communications for the City of Moncton. “Our strategy includes creating a centralized online presence to allow people to plan ahead, in partnership with the facility operator, SMG Canada, and Downtown Moncton Centre-ville inc.”

“When the site selection process occurred for the Events Centre, one of the main goals focused on downtown revitalization,” explained Kevin Silliker, director of Economic Development for the City of Moncton. “By dispersing traffic throughout the heart of our city, opportunities are created for the many shops, restaurants and hotels in the area. This also encourages development, and the anticipated results are already taking shape: the City has issued over $35 million in building permits in the last 6 months. This is good news for our City and private sector interests, as property values will increase.”
