City of Moncton: Reducing our environmental footprint

Moncton is a city whose residents believe in sustainability, creativity, and leadership. A city where innovative decisions are made that take our environment, our economics, and our community into consideration. We all want the same thing: to leave our children and our children’s children a better community.

As we continue to promote the health and beauty of our growing city, we foster our area’s natural resources and green spaces. We will continue to invest in active and alternative transportation, such as walking, cycling, and public transit, because fewer cars on the roads mean cleaner air.

In this section of our website you will learn more about what your municipality is doing for the environment, and how you too can make our community a greener place to live.

Earth Hour

Image of the Earth Hour logoWe hope that you will join the City of Moncton and the millions of others around the world participating in Earth Hour at 8:30 pm on March 27, 2010 to show it is possible to take action on climate change.

Switching off your lights is just one simple action that you can take to help make a difference and it sends a powerful message that we care about our planet.

For more information, visit the Earth  Hour website.

EcoAction Teams

Earth Day CanadaIn partnership with Earth Day Canada, the City of Moncton is the second municipality in Canada to launch the EcoAction Teams program, which is aimed at increasing awareness on energy conservation, water conservation, waste reduction, sustainable transportation and sustainable gardening. The community-focused initiative not only provides information about simple ways to conserve energy and reduce waste, but it also lets people track their progress.

The cornerstone of this program is an easy to use, Internet based calculator where citizens can find simple, realistic conservation actions they can do at home to help the environment and save money.

Residents who are interested in participating in the EcoAction Teams program can visit www.ecoactionteams.ca where they will find a link to the conservation calculator (My Calculator). Participants can challenge themselves as individuals, or can create a team with friends, family, co-workers or neighbours. The calculator will not only help participants see how they can reduce their environmental footprint but also compare their results to provincial or Canadian averages.
