Active and Safe Routes to School

Active School Bus

The City of Moncton and School District 2 are proud to launch the Active School Bus; a fun, healthy and environmentally-friendly way for Moncton students to get to school. The Active School Bus is a walking group, led by parents and volunteers, that helps connect kids who are, or those who want to start walking to school. The Active and Safe Routes to School program also places a high priority on safety for students.

Active School Bus Pedibus

Each Active School Bus is led by a volunteer adult who will ensure that the ‘bus’ stays on route, and stays safe. A number of safety audits have also been conducted to identify potential safety issues for pedestrians and cyclists, which are then reported to the Active and Safe Routes to School committee at each school. As an added safety measure, volunteers and some students will be wearing safety vests, which will make the ‘bus’ more visible to motorists and also to those who would like to join the walk.

Evergreen and Hillcrest are the first two schools to participate in the Active School Bus, through this partnership between the City of Moncton, School District 2, and the Province of NB, who have helped to fund this pilot project. The buses will be walking every Tuesday at each of these schools until the end of the school year.
