Moncton Cultural Plan: Telling our Story

2011-2015

Moncton City Council adopted a new cultural plan for the City of Moncton on October 4, 2010. This is the City’s first cultural action plan.

At the beginning of his term, Mayor George LeBlanc asked the Cultural Affairs and Heritage Committee, chaired by Councillor Paulette Thériault, to develop a cultural plan for the city.

The Moncton Cultural Plan: Telling Our Story is designed to focus the City’s delivery of cultural services for the next five years. It was developed through an extensive consultation process involving a broad range of people from all different sectors.

Priority Areas:

The plan proposes eight priority areas, drawn from the analysis of data collected during consultations. They include:

  • Downtown Revitalization and Urban Planning;
  • Festivals and Events;
  • Funding and Economic Development;
  • Heritage Promotion and Preservation;
  • Infrastructure;
  • Partnerships and Collaborative Projects;
  • Promotion and Communications;
  • Public Art.

The plan promotes cultural development as a collective endeavour that requires the engagement of all stakeholders in the community, including the City of Moncton. Partnerships with the City will ensure projects are met with community support and are designed to remain sustainable.

Key Projects:

Projects in the plan focus on establishing basic cultural services and filling existing gaps in the areas of arts, culture and heritage. Key projects include:

  • establishing a business skills workshop series for cultural organizations;
  • promoting Moncton’s history in key locations with interpretive signage;
  • developing basic communication tools for all cultural organizations to utilize;
  • hosting a cultural forum every two years; and
  • submitting an application to the Cultural Capitals of Canada program for a potential 2012 designation in order to tap into resources that could significantly strengthen Moncton’s cultural sector.

A new community-based board, the Moncton Cultural Board, replaces the Cultural Affairs and Heritage Committee. The new board has the mandate of overseeing the implementation of the actions in the plan.
