City of Moncton to Begin Annual Watermain Flushing Program 2023-04-14

On Monday, April 17, the City of Moncton will begin it’s annual Watermain Flushing Program, expected to take place in three zones in the City each week from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The program is expected to be completed in July.

Residents may experience discolouration in their water when flushing is taking place in their immediate area. This is due to potential manganese deposits being flushed out from the water system. Other than discolouration, residents may experience slight changes in water pressure while the water is being flushed in their immediate area. Water service should not be interrupted, and this will not affect the safety of the drinking water supply.

The annual Watermain Flushing Program takes place each spring when there is extra water available. Since water typically moves through the underground pipes at less than 1 km/hr, mineral deposits accumulate in the pipes over time. The build-up can restrict water flow in the pipes and contributes to corrosion and water colour problems. Annual flushing of pipes and fire hydrants removes the mineral deposits and is critical to maintaining the quality of the water system.

The City would like to advise residents of the following:

  • Each Friday, we will update the watermain flushing map to advise residents of the areas to be flushed the following week
  • Should water pressure issues or discolouration last more than a few hours, please contact our 24/7 Public Works dispatch line at 506-859-2643

We appreciate the understanding of residents and apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.
