Swim tests are for persons aged 11 and under who may want less restrictions during open swims. Children aged 12 and over are not required to pass a swim test, however lifeguards can implement restrictions for any swimmer, regardless of age, if there is a safety concern. This could include enforcing PFD usage or limiting access to the shallow end only.
The Swim Test includes:
• Jump into Deep Water
• Surface Support for 1 minute
• Swim 15 meters horizontal without touching the bottom or side of the pool.
These standards are to be completed in a safe sequence. Lifeguards must be completely satisfied with the swimmer’s capability for successful completion.
Lifeguards can deny bracelets or limit the swimmer to the shallow end of the pool if the lifeguard feels their swim skills warrant it. This includes anyone who has already passed a swim test or for a swimmer 12 years or older. Safety will always come first.
