The City of Moncton regulates signs on private and public property to manage the type, size, location and other features.

Portable Signs in Moncton

The City of Moncton requires a permit for the installation of portable signs.

Portable signs are temporary signs that can be installed for 30 days or one year.

This type of sign is relocatable or removable, used for short-term advertising and not anchored below ground level or to any surface.

You can apply online or in person at City Hall. 

The annual permit costs $100+tx

A 30-day Special Permit costs $25+tx

A permit issued under this by-law expires on March 31 of the year after it was issued, except for a special permit, which expires 30 days after the date it was issued.

No more than one portable sign may be placed on a property at any one time.

A portable sign must be placed at least 1.5 meters away from any property line, at least 3 meters away from any driveway, and must not be located within the sight triangle described in Section 2.15 of the City of Moncton Zoning By-Law.

-  Sign shall not have more than 2 sign faces.

- No one sign dimension to be greater than 2.4 meters.

- A certificate from a professional engineer is required as to structural integrity and stability of sign when sign face exceeds 3 square meters.

- Sign face area cannot be greater than 3.7 square meters. 

-  Maximum height of sign cannot exceed 2.7 meters. 

The portable sign shall not be located on City-owned lands without the approval of the By-Law Enforcement Coordinator.

  • The street line and/or other boundaries of the property on which it is proposed to erect the sign.
  • The proposed location of the sign upon the property in relation to all other structures existing or proposed on such property, including measurements adequate to show its location.
  • The dimensions and total area of the proposed sign.

Written consent from the property owner or occupier is required, authorizing the By-Law Enforcement Coordinator (or their agent or designate) to enter the property and remove the sign at the owner's expense if any provision of this by-law is being violated, or if the permit has been revoked or has expired.

A portable sign may only be illuminated using indirect lighting that reflects off the sign's message. It must not use flashing or sequential lights, mechanical or electronic devices, or any features that create or simulate motion.
