City of Moncton launches Municipal Plan Review

The City of Moncton has begun a review of its Municipal Plan and Zoning By-Law.

The Municipal Plan is one of the municipality’s most important documents, used to guide growth and development in the city. The Zoning By-Law implements the policies that make up the Municipal Plan by establishing development rules for the city.

The City of Moncton’s current Municipal Plan and Zoning By-Law were adopted in 2014. Moncton City Council is required to periodically review and update the Municipal Plan to ensure its objectives and policies remain current and relevant and to meet the requirements of the Community Planning Act and other provincial policies and regulations.

“The Municipal Plan Review is a once-in-a-decade opportunity for residents to weigh in and help shape the future of development in the city,” says Deputy Mayor Paulette Thériault. “I encourage people to take the time to participate in the public engagement events that will be held over the coming year to share their thoughts and ideas and help make the new plan truly reflective of our vibrant community.”

Once the review is complete, the City of Moncton will have an updated Municipal Plan and Zoning By-Law that is forward-looking and that will help ensure future growth and development aligns with the community’s goals and priorities.

The City has engaged WSP, an engineering and professional services consulting firm with extensive experience in planning and with similar projects, to lead the review process. An advisory committee made up of residents and members of Council and the Planning Advisory Committee has also been convened to provide feedback and direction on the review.

“Our Committee is made up of members with experience in a variety of fields, who each bring a different perspective to the table,” says Roxanne Richard, co-chair of the Municipal Plan Review Committee. “We have been meeting since the fall to learn more about the current challenges and opportunities the City of Moncton faces and we are eager to begin hearing from the wider community. The Committee is conscious of how important this review is and is committed to advancing an updated plan that is inclusive, equitable, and sustainable.”

There will be opportunities for members of the public to get involved throughout all phases of the project. Opportunities for engagement will be posted to the project page: https://letschatmoncton.ca/municipal-plan

The public engagement process will kick off with two vision workshops, scheduled for June 17. Members of the public are invited to drop into Legends at the Moncton Coliseum from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. or 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to share feedback on key priorities like housing, economic development, environment and climate change, cultural heritage, and more.
