Former Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc passes away

Posted on February 4, 2026 in News

George LeBlanc, who served two terms as mayor of the City of Moncton, has died.

Prior to serving as mayor from 2008 to 2016, LeBlanc was elected to Moncton City Council three times, serving as a councillor from 1995 to 2004. In all, he dedicated 17 years to serving the citizens of Moncton.

“We are saddened to hear of George’s passing,” says City of Moncton Deputy Mayor Paulette Thériault. “Council members who served with him, myself included, as well as members of staff, all speak very highly of him. He was a wonderful colleague, a dedicated leader, and a friend.”

LeBlanc’s time as mayor was marked by strong economic growth and he was known for saying the City “punched above its weight” in terms of the investments and events it was able to attract. One of the most visible legacies of his tenure is the Avenir Centre, a project that he championed. The idea of building an events centre downtown was met with much criticism, but LeBlanc believed that it would serve as a catalyst to downtown development, which has proven to be the case.

He was also lauded for his leadership during the June 2014 shooting in the city. His calm and steadying influence was instrumental in guiding the city not only through the initial days of uncertainty, but in the weeks and months that followed the tragedy.

LeBlanc was awarded the Order of Moncton in 2024 in recognition of his many contributions to the community.

The flags at Moncton City Hall have been lowered to half-mast in his honour.

We would like to extend our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Condolences can also be made online
