Guidelines

This program supports local, registered, not-for-profit organizations for the hosting of one-time, non-recurring international, national, regional and provincial sporting and cultural events that bring economic benefits to Moncton by attracting out-of-town spectators to the city.

Note: Recurring events that meet the objectives of this program may apply for funding. However, because this program primarily targets non recurring events, priority will be given to them, as funds are limited.

IMPORTANT: This program does not apply to local community events and festivals. For information on City support to local community events and festivals, see the Event Application Form.

  • Increase economic activity in the region by supporting the hosting of events that bring out-of-town spectators to the city;
  • Assist local clubs and associations in bringing non-recurring events to Moncton and as a result, foster their growth and development;
  • Optimize the use of Moncton’s venues through event hosting; and
  • Position Moncton as a leading event hosting destination.

To qualify for funding under this program, the event must:

  • occur in Moncton;
  • be at least three days in length;
  • be one-time, and non-recurring (Recurring events that meet the objectives of this program may apply for funding, however, priority is given to non-recurring events.);
  • be a not-for-profit event;
  • be international, national, regional or provincial in scope (see Event Scope Criteria below);
  • be sporting or cultural in nature;
  • be inclusive, and must not exclude anyone because of religion, national or ethnic origin, colour, language, sex, gender, sexual orientation, age, or mental of physical disability;
  • be sanctioned by the events rights holder or governing authority;
  • present detailed and balanced budget projections (no surplus or deficit).;
  • bring economic benefits to Moncton by attracting out-of-town spectators to the city; and
  • foster the development of local sporting and/or cultural communities.

  • Conferences, meetings, conventions, symposia, seminars, clinics
  • Banquets and galas
  • Trade shows and consumer shows

  • Recurring, annual events (Recurring events that meet the objectives of this program may apply for funding, however, priority is given to non-recurring events.)

To qualify for funding under this program, events must meet the following scope criteria: 

Provincial Event: 

  • minimum of 100 participants;
  • sanctioned by the event rights holder or governing authority;
  • minimum of ten villages, towns or cities represented; and
  • at least one third of participants are coming from/living outside of Southeast New Brunswick. (Southeast New Brunswick encompasses communities in Albert, Kent, and Westmorland counties.)

Regional Event: 

  • minimum of 100 participants;
  • sanctioned by the event rights holder or governing authority;
  • minimum of four (4) provinces, territories or states represented; and
  • at least one third of participants are coming from/living outside of New Brunswick.

National Event:

  • minimum of 50 participants;
  • sanctioned by the event rights holder or governing authority;
  • minimum of seven (7) Canadian provinces and territories represented; and
  • at least one third of participants are coming from/living outside of New Brunswick.

International Event: 

  • minimum of 50 participants;
  • sanctioned by the event rights holder or governing authority; OR the international invitational event that does not belong to an international competition circuit, but is nonetheless sanctioned by an international or intercontinental sport federation;
  • minimum of two countries represented; and
  • at least one third of participants are coming from/living outside of Canada.

Diversified sources of funding
Events with diversified sources of public and private funding will be given priority.

Seasonality
Events hosted during the non-tourism season will receive higher levels of funding than those held during the tourism season.

Maximum
A grant from this program may fund up to a maximum of 20% of the event budget.

Eligible expenses:

  • Event operating costs
  • Legacy initiatives directly related to the event (equipment purchase, coaching clinics, etc.)

Ineligible expenses:

  • Capital projects
  • Prize money
  • Local club’s operating expenses 
  • Profit venture

Multi-Year Hosting
If an organization wishes to host a national or international event for two consecutive years in Moncton, the City may consider expanded support pending the availability of funds and discussion with the organization.

Funding Levels:

  • Provincial events: up to a maximum of $2,500
  • Regional events: up to a maximum of $5,000
  • National events: up to a maximum of $10,000
  • International events: up to a maximum of $15,000

IMPORTANT:
Funding is not guaranteed; applications may result in full, partial or no funding.

Applicants must fill out the Economic Impact Projections Data Sheets that can also be found in the Event Hosting Grant Application.

This information helps us estimate your event’s economic impact, evaluate the effectiveness of our funding, and provide you with a report that can support your funding requests to other partners.

If you don’t have all the data required in the Data Sheets, reasonable estimates are acceptable. Please explain any estimates or assumptions that you apply to your calculations in the column to that effect in the Data Sheets.

Applications must be received at least six (6) weeks before the event and may be submitted up to one (1) year before the event.

An organization may only apply for an event hosting grant for the same event once every three years.

Your application should contain:

Initial Payment: 50% of the approved grant will be issued within the 60 days leading up to the event.

Final Payment: 50% of the approved grant will be issued within 60 days after the event pending the receipt of the post event report and financial statement outlining actual revenues and expenses of the event.

Post-event Report: The Post-event Report Form must be filled out and submitted to the City of Moncton within 60 days after the event for the final grant payment to be issued.
