About the program

The City of Moncton’s Recreation and Culture teams are excited to launch its Placemaking Program: an initiative that supports resident-led projects designed to enhance community spaces, strengthen neighbourhood connections, and bring people together.

The Placemaking Program invites community members to collaborate on community-focused activations or events, with financial support to help turn ideas into action.

Up to $750 in funding is available per project for approved applicants.

Some examples of placemaking projects include:

  • Creative park walkways where painted art and interactive games encourage exploration and connection.
  • A neighbourhood skill swap where residents share hobbies, crafts, and talents.
  • Little free libraries that bring books and people together.

Comfortable gathering spots that turn ordinary park corners into lively community spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

A placemaking project requires a team of committed neighbourhood volunteers to lead a neighbourhood meeting, communicate with the neighbourhood, liaise with municipal team members, recruit volunteers, and plan and lead the placemaking celebration day.

The team typically works on the project in the months leading up to the event day.  Successful projects require a committed team and are more successful with just one or two committed core team members.

The team must organize a neighbourhood meeting with demonstrated neighbourhood support, where the design, location, and volunteer recruitment will be discussed. Additional forms of engagement, such as surveys, one-on-one conversations, flyers and online polls and promotions are also recommended.

You may be surprised to find an artist in your neighborhood when you connect with residents about your project.  The municipality is also happy to help you connect with an artist or illustrator.

At this time, projects must be on municipally owned land, ideally your neighbourhood park!
